Ceramic artist Kristen Avil is interested in not just the function of a piece but also it’s textural and compositional qualities. To create her porcelain jewelry and button bowls, she uses antique buttons originally used by her great-grandmother, a seamstress, to carefully craft each piece. She also hand builds porcelain vessels and wall decorations. The carvings in the walls of the vessels and detailed feathers convey a sense of tranquility and symmetry found in nature. Each piece is individually made, making no two exactly alike. Kristen Avil has a background in art education and spent the last few years as an elementary art teacher in Northern Virginia.
Avil sells her ceramic artworks and takes commissions upon request.
